On June 27, 2026, Hope for Dementia invites the community to join us for Stories in Song – A Celebration of Unofficial Anthems, a free multicultural concert presented with the support of the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage in celebration of Multiculturalism Day.
Taking place at Paroisse Saint-Laurent in Montréal, this special afternoon will bring together artists, families, caregivers, community members, and music lovers for a celebration of the songs that connect us to our cultures, our memories, and one another.
When Memories Fade, Music Remains
Dementia affects millions of people worldwide and touches individuals from every culture, language, and background. It does not discriminate. While dementia can gradually affect memory, communication, and daily life, one powerful form of connection often remains: music.
For many people living with dementia, a familiar melody can awaken memories thought to be forgotten. A cherished song can spark recognition, evoke emotion, and create meaningful moments of connection with loved ones. Research and lived experience continue to demonstrate the remarkable relationship between music and memory, reminding us that music reaches places words sometimes cannot.
At Hope for Dementia, we believe that fostering connection is essential to supporting individuals and families affected by dementia. Through Stories in Song, we celebrate the unique power of music to unite people across generations, cultures, and experiences.
Celebrating Canada’s Cultural Mosaic
Multiculturalism is one of Canada’s greatest strengths. Every community carries its own songs, stories, traditions, and unofficial anthems—music that reflects identity, belonging, resilience, and pride.
Stories in Song will showcase this diversity through performances by artists representing a variety of cultural backgrounds and musical traditions.
The afternoon will be hosted by acclaimed Canadian folk musician Rob Lutes, who will serve as Master of Ceremonies and perform well-loved unofficial anthems. The event will begin with the Canadian National Anthem and welcome remarks from community leaders and representatives.
Audiences will also enjoy performances by:
Susan Xianshu Huang, a Chinese-Canadian vocalist performing beloved songs rooted in Chinese and Tibetan musical traditions.
Nadine Altoujni brings together influences from Syriaand the broader Middle East through powerful and engaging musical performances.
Aparna Sainath and Saraswati Sainath, a mother-daughter duo celebrating Indian musical traditions through song and the beautiful sounds of the Veena, one of India’s most cherished classical instruments.
Together, these artists will share music that reflects the richness of their cultural heritage while demonstrating the universal language that connects us all.
A Community Event for Everyone
Stories in Song is designed as an inclusive and welcoming event for people of all ages.
In addition to live musical performances, attendees will enjoy complimentary refreshments throughout the afternoon. Families are encouraged to attend, with creative activities available for children. Student volunteers and community partners will also be present to help create a warm and engaging environment for all.
Whether you are living with dementia, caring for a loved one, interested in cultural diversity, or simply passionate about music, we invite you to join us for this special celebration.
