Your Gift of Hope Makes a Difference

The growing tsunami of dementia presents an immense global challenge. Pre-pandemic estimates already indicated a significant rise in cases, expected to triple by 2050. In Canada alone, where over half a million individuals currently live with dementia, projections suggest a near doubling to one million by 2033. This surge not only strains healthcare resources but also profoundly impacts individuals and families.

Urgent action is imperative to address this growing crisis and ensure adequate support and care for those affected by dementia.

Join us at Hope for Dementia in our mission to reduce dementia risks and enhance seniors’ lives through engaging programs. Research shows that 40% of dementia cases can be prevented through manageable factors like nutrition and social interaction.

Your support isn’t just a donation; it’s an investment in a brighter future.

Our Petitions
Make Dementia Prevention a Health Care Priority

Through a series of petitions to the federal and provincial governments, Hope for Dementia is advocating for dementia prevention to become a national health priority with prevention strategies and services deployed at all levels of the healthcare system in Canada.

The petitions call for the adoption of strategies to reduce avoidable diagnoses; decelerate the risks and symptoms of dementia through the deployment of a standardized cognitive evaluation test; and reverse symptoms of mild cognitive dementia by giving access to clinical trials.  A framework for prevention strategies is outlined in Hope for Dementia’s White Paper: Altering the forecast on the tsunami of dementia.

The petition to the federal government was submitted with over 500 signatures to the House of Commons in spring of 2022.   In his response to our petition to the Federal Minister of Health, Parliamentary Secretary of Health Adam van Koeverden stated that “The successful implementation of Canada’s national dementia strategy relies on the efforts of many organizations and individuals across the country including federal, provincial, territorial and local governments…”

Our advocacy continues.

A similar petition was presented to the Québec National Assembly on 1 December, 2022.  In her response to Hope for Dementia’s petition, Deputy Minister of Health, Sonia Bélanger stated that “the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MSSS) includes in its priorities, and pays close attention to, major cognitive impairments.  In fact, for 15 years now, the MSSS has been very involved in major cognitive impairments and hosts a strategic-level ministerial advisory committee that brings together some 25 people from different backgrounds to support the development of directions.”

“We applaud the government’s National Dementia Strategy which focuses on post diagnosis therapies, but prevention must now also become a priority before our health care system, resources and caregivers become overwhelmed.”
