Freezing rain may lead to power outages. Restoration times may vary depending on the area and the scale of the situation.
During a power outage, some people may try to use alternative heating devices or equipment not intended for indoor use to keep warm or to cook. However, this can pose a risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.
Please remember that fuel-burning appliances (oil, gas, wood, gasoline, charcoal, propane, etc.) must never be used indoors. Similarly, equipment designed for outdoor use, such as barbecues or camping gear, should never be used as an indoor heating source or for cooking.
Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas that is odorless, colorless, and tasteless, produced during combustion. Symptoms of CO poisoning may include:
- headaches
- dizziness
- fatigue
- visual disturbances
- nausea and vomiting
In more severe cases, loss of consciousness, seizures, and even death may occur.
