WOMEN: SELF-CARE IS NOT SELFISH

On this International Women’s Day, Hope for Dementia reminds all women to take care of their brain health.
Why?
Women are disproportionately affected by Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias.
- The World Health Organization estimates that women provide 70% of care hours for people living with dementia.
- According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, around twice as many women have Alzheimer’s disease – the most common type of dementia – compared to men. Women have a greater risk of developing dementia during their lifetime. The main reason for this is thought to be because women live longer than men. Age is the biggest risk factor for dementia so living longer means that the risk of developing it is greater.
Reduce your risk of dementia by 40% by paying attention to:
- Nutrition – eat well to reduce the risks of diabetes, hypertension, alcoholism, smoking,
- Physical activity – get up off the couch and go!
- Socialising with others – to reduce social isolation and depression, get involved in a group activity to learn new things and keep your mind active.
Hope for Dementia’s Resource Center is brimming with information – brochures, videos and much more – to help you take care of yourself and reduce the risks of dementia!
